President-elect Trump appointed Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to lead DOGE, a new advisory body intended to cut government bureaucracy and waste.
A nod to Musk’s favored cryptocurrency, Dogecoin, The CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, xAI, Neuralink, and possessor of X will lead DOGE alongside biotech entrepreneur and previous presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, President-elect Donald Trump declared that Elon Musk would co-lead the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), on Tuesday.
They are tasked with advancing Trump’s goal to “dismantle government bureaucracy, together, eradicate wasteful expenditures, reduce excessive regulations, and reorder federal agencies. His claims will improve efficiency and accountability, and this exertion aligns with Trump’s promise of a leaner government structure.
This means that it won’t necessitate legislative approval or federal funding. The DOGE initiative will be an external advisory body rather than a traditional government agency. DOGE will work closely with the White House and the Office of Management & Budget instead of offering outside perspectives to care for the administration’s goals. Marking the nation’s 250th anniversary, according to Trump’s campaign, DOGE’s work will be accomplished by July 4, 2026.
For several months, while stumping for Trump nationwide, Musk has implied at a Department of Government. During an October rally in New York, though he didn’t specify which ones might be beleaguered, Musk vowed to identify “at least $2 trillion in cuts” across federal agencies. As specific policies or agencies earmarked for cuts have yet to be divulged, whether he and Ramaswamy can deliver on this promise remains indeterminate.
Trump and Musk have established a close working relationship in recent months, solidified after a joint conversation on X Spaces in August. Throughout Trump’s 2024 campaign, the America PAC and presented rallies in pivotal swing states, Musk donated over $100 million to a pro-Trump super PAC.
Strengthening Musk’s impact on the incoming administration’s plans to reshape federal governments, Trump officially offered Musk the role of DOGE’s co-leader during a September appearance at the Economic Club of New York.
