After seven years of heartbreak, addiction, loss, and resilience in Port Charles, Sofia Mattsson is ready for a new zip code. The Swedish-born actress, best known for portraying the beloved Sasha Gilmore on General Hospital since 2018, has officially signed with Days of Our Lives.
This move trades ABC’s daytime drama for the iconic canvas of Salem, the long-standing fictional Midwestern setting of the series.
The news officially surfaced on March 30 through a leading industry report, and by the time the official Days of Our Lives Instagram shared a high-profile dressing room Instagram photo, the daytime television world was already buzzing.
A Seven-Year Chapter Officially Closed
As Deadline reported, a representative for General Hospital confirmed that Mattsson’s July 2025 exit came at a natural point in the storyline, and she remained open to a future return. Her character, Sasha, left Port Charles with her newborn daughter, Daisy, aided by Jason Morgan, moving to Paris to reunite with her parents, Holly Sutton and Robert Scorpio.

The departure concluded one of daytime television’s most emotionally complex arcs: a woman who survived being a paid impostor, drug addiction, the death of an infant son, and institutionalization before finding peace.
Mattsson herself told Deadline she was definitely not opposed to coming back to the soap world, adding she had some exciting new projects in the works and hoped to see everyone through another screen soon. That next screen, it turns out, belongs to Salem, and fans of both shows could not be more ready for it.
Salem Gains a Fan Favorite in a Mystery Role
According to TV Insider, Mattsson said she had a great time on General Hospital but was excited for a new chapter and new projects. She described her last day on set after her seven-year run as emotional, noting that cleaning out her room and knowing she would not see all her friends there as usual felt genuinely sad.
Days of Our Lives officially announced the casting on Instagram with a photo of Mattsson outside dressing room 28, captioning: “Sofia Mattsson is making her way to Salem early next year.”

Her character name and storyline remain under wraps, though the soap’s nine-to-ten month taping schedule confirms filming is already underway.
In early March, Mattsson had already signaled her fresh start by posting a brunette selfie on Instagram.

The photo, captioned “Soaking up the LA sunshine,” marked a quiet but telling departure from the signature blonde she wore throughout her entire General Hospital run.
What Her Move Means for Daytime Television
Sofia Mattsson’s jump from General Hospital to Days of Our Lives continues a long and storied tradition of daytime crossovers that consistently inject fresh energy into both shows. She joins a formidable Salem cast led by the legendary Deidre Hall, whose decades-long presence on the show makes her one of the most popular TV show icons in daytime history.
General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini praised Mattsson at her exit, calling her a great actress and dear friend, making her move to Salem feel like a celebration rather than a departure. With her debut set for early 2027 and her role still mysterious, anticipation is already building in true daytime television fashion.
